gumi: SBI-affiliated game maker with a crypto-heavy balance sheet

gumi Inc. (3903) · Published 2026-10-24 · Beluuga AI Research Team · Independent research

Not investment advice or a solicitation. See Important disclosures below.

Business overview

  • gumi develops and operates smartphone games in Japan and Asia. Players pay through Apple Inc. and Google Inc. as payment agents, and these two were the largest and second-largest customers in the year to April 2026.
  • A second business holds and actively manages crypto assets, runs nodes on several blockchains for validator and staking rewards, develops blockchain games, and invests through funds. These include equity-method stakes in VR Fund, L.P., gumi Cryptos Capital and Decima Fund, LP.
  • For the year to April 2026 the company reported two segments, Mobile Online Games and Blockchain etc. From the first quarter of the year to April 2027 they were renamed Neo Media Entertainment and Neo Crypto, and prior-year quarterly figures were restated on the new basis.
  • The fiscal year ends April 30. The group has carried out restructuring: it sold subsidiary Alim to GungHo Online Entertainment in December 2024 and absorbed subsidiary FgG in August 2025, and the annual report attributes a decline in headcount mainly to ending loss-making titles.

Investment case

  1. SBI Holdings, Inc. is listed in the annual securities report as an "other affiliated company" holding voting rights in gumi under a capital and business alliance signed in December 2022 (see Shareholders). The company states that its new segments are designed to work with the SBI group's neo-media and digital-space strategy, and in June 2025 it decided to form a listed crypto-asset fund jointly with SBI.
  2. The crypto segment reported an operating profit in both the year to April 2026 and the first quarter of the year to April 2027, while the game segment lost money (see Performance & Balance). The first-quarter release attributes the higher crypto segment profit to lower outsourcing and advertising costs.
  3. The annual report states that, for the time being, the company will not develop original game titles. It will instead combine its own game engine with other companies' popular IP and expand contract development, which it describes as a shift from high-risk to low-risk development.
  4. In April 2025 the company formed Hinode Technologies, a joint venture with TIS Inc., which runs nodes and sells a crypto-asset accounting system to other companies. The annual report describes this as a recurring-revenue business intended to support results over the medium to long term.

Bear case

  1. The crypto exchange MEXC delisted FCT, the group's largest crypto holding by carrying value, on August 14, 2026. Delistings of OSHI, the second-largest holding, were announced by BITPOINT, Gate.io and MEXC in September 2026. The company is reviewing whether an active market still exists for each token. If it concludes one does not, the token must be carried at acquisition cost and written down where the expected disposal value is below cost.
  2. Gains and losses on crypto assets are booked below operating profit, so reported earnings move with token prices. In the first quarter of the year to April 2027, crypto valuation and sale losses turned a prior-year ordinary profit into a loss (see Performance & Balance). The company does not publish an earnings forecast and paid no dividend for the year to April 2026.
  3. The game segment's operating loss widened in the year to April 2026 and again in the first quarter of the year to April 2027. The company attributes the first-quarter loss to revenue from the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure title falling below expectations and to development costs for a new title. Impairment losses were recorded in the game segment in the year to April 2026.
  4. Operating cash flow was negative in each of the last two fiscal years and cash declined while short-term borrowings rose (see Performance & Balance). In October 2025 the board resolved to issue its 26th series of stock acquisition rights to a third party with an exercise-price adjustment clause, which can add new shares and dilute existing holders.

Catalysts

  • The company's determination, from the second quarter of the year to April 2027 onward, of whether active markets still exist for FCT and OSHI, including the OSHI delistings scheduled for September 2026 on Gate.io and October 28, 2026 on BITPOINT.
  • Performance of My Hero Academia UNITED SURVIVAL, launched August 6, 2026, and of additional licensed-IP titles the company says it has begun developing.
  • Progress on the stated plan to move the parent company's crypto holdings in principle into a single token, which the annual report names as XRP, and to use option trading on those holdings to generate income.

Key risks

  • The company states that its results and financial position depend heavily on crypto-asset market conditions and prices. It also cites changes in crypto regulation and tax rules, and the possibility of tokens held in its electronic wallets being lost to unauthorized access with no means of recovery.
  • Game distribution depends on contracts with platform operators such as Apple and Google, and a change in their policies could make providing titles difficult. Development and advertising costs for titles have been rising.
  • Sales are concentrated among a few counterparties, including EPOCH FACTORY PTE. LTD. in the blockchain segment. Overseas operations expose results to country risk and to foreign-exchange translation effects.
  • The board has six members: the president, one other executive director, and four outside directors who make up both the audit and supervisory committee and the nomination and remuneration committee. One outside director resigned in December 2025. Stock options granted to officers and employees can also dilute existing shareholders.

Trading liquidity

Median daily trading value US$1.06mn

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • Crypto assets with an active market are carried at market value, and crypto received as payment is reported as "other revenue" outside the revenue-recognition standard. Profit can therefore diverge widely from operating results, and the valuation basis for FCT and OSHI may change.
  • The segment renaming from the year to April 2027 means first-quarter segment figures are not directly comparable with segment figures in the annual securities report for the year to April 2026, although the prior-year quarter was restated.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to April 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to April 2027.
