Business overview

  • Imagineer reports a single segment, the content business, covering mobile content, character goods manufacturing and licensing, packaged software for game consoles, and overseas sales. Recent console releases include the Fit Boxing series, Disney-licensed fitness and music titles, a Sumikko Gurashi title and, in the first quarter of the year to March 2027, a new Medarot title for Nintendo Switch.
  • Revenue reaches users largely through platforms: the annual securities report names Nintendo (mainly packaged software), NTT Docomo (paid information services billed through Docomo), Apple and Google (in-app billing) as its major customers (see Performance & Balance).
  • The group consists of the parent and two subsidiaries: imagineer nexus, wholly owned, for marketing and content, and SoWhat, a smartphone-game developer that is consolidated because the company controls it in substance even though it holds no more than half of it.
  • Sales are reported by region as Japan, China and other. The company has run on a March fiscal year with no change in the period covered, and it employed 125 people on a consolidated basis at March 31, 2026.

Investment case

  1. Most of the company's assets are investment securities and deposits, and the annual securities report states that working capital and capital spending are funded from its own resources (see Performance & Balance).
  2. Since the year to March 2023 the company has, by its own statement, significantly increased research and development spending on console and smartphone games to create new titles that can drive growth.
  3. The first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027 shows an operating profit against an operating loss a year earlier, and the full-year forecast calls for higher operating profit than in the year to March 2026 (see Performance & Balance).
  4. The articles of incorporation allow the board, rather than the shareholders' meeting, to decide dividends, and the company forecasts the same annual dividend for the year to March 2027 as for the prior year, paid in equal interim and year-end installments.

Bear case

  1. Operating profit fell in the year to March 2026 on lower content sales, while ordinary profit and net income rose because of gains on the sale of investment securities. A large part of reported earnings therefore comes from the securities portfolio rather than the game business.
  2. The company forecasts lower ordinary profit and net income for the year to March 2027 than in the prior year, even as it expects higher operating profit.
  3. The balance sheet composition shifts sharply between periods: investment securities rose and deposits fell during the year to March 2026, and the reverse occurred in the first quarter of the year to March 2027. The company does not state a policy for how these funds will be deployed or returned.
  4. IIB, an asset-management company, is classified as an 'other affiliated company' holding a large share of voting rights with an officer serving at both, and the chairman is himself a major shareholder (see Shareholders). Minority holders have limited influence over the outcome of shareholder votes.

Catalysts

  • Second-quarter results for the year to March 2027, including the interim dividend for the September 30 record date that the board can declare under the articles.
  • Progress against the full-year forecast for the year to March 2027, which the company left unchanged in the first-quarter earnings release.
  • How the funds moved out of investment securities and into deposits in the first quarter of the year to March 2027 are subsequently used, as shown in the next balance sheets (see Performance & Balance).

Key risks

  • The company identifies dependence on platform operators, including NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank, Apple, Google and LY Corporation, whose changes in policy, payment-collection fees or business conditions could affect results; under its collection agreements with Docomo and KDDI, uncollectible user fees revert to the company.
  • The company discloses dependence on a small number of popular content titles and on licenses from rights holders, and states that loss of a license or a licensor entering the same business could stop the related service.
  • The company lists dependence on its chairman, a director who is a major shareholder and broadly involved in running the group, as a business risk.
  • The company holds investment securities exposed to market prices and exchange rates, and it also cites collection and currency risk on receivables from customers in China.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • The first-quarter earnings release was not reviewed by an auditor and includes no quarterly cash flow statement, and the balance sheet it shows differs materially in composition from the one in the annual securities report.
  • The governance description refers to a proposal at the June 19, 2026 annual meeting to elect five directors, and board composition after that meeting should be checked against later filings.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.

Securities of Japanese issuers. The securities discussed are issued by companies incorporated in Japan and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. They may not be registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933, and the issuers may not be subject to the periodic reporting requirements of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Information about these issuers may be less extensive than information about U.S. issuers, and their financial statements are prepared under Japanese GAAP, IFRS or U.S. GAAP as each issuer elects. U.S. persons may face restrictions, tax consequences and practical limits on buying, holding or selling these securities.
