SANEI: Copper costs squeeze faucet maker as leadership changes

Business overview

  • SANEI is a specialist maker of faucets, water-supply and drainage fittings, joints and piping parts. Its lines range from standard faucets to design-led premium brands such as VERSE and the designer collaboration brand sʌnei, plus products with ultrafine-bubble, touch-panel, sensor and voice-recognition functions.
  • The group reports a single segment, the faucet and fittings business. It manages sales through four routes: pipe-supply dealers (with promotion to developers and architects), retail (home centers, electronics stores, drugstores, TV and online sellers), housing-equipment makers that build kitchens and bathrooms, and exports to Asian markets including China, Taiwan and Indonesia.
  • Production is centered on the Gifu plant in Kakamigahara, which handles casting through assembly, supported by a plating plant nearby, an assembly plant in Osaka, a subsidiary in Dalian, China, and the subsidiary Mizuseikatsu Seisakusho in Yamagata, Gifu. The group had 827 employees at March 31, 2026, with branches in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka and 23 sales offices nationwide.
  • The company states that most of its sales come from faucets sold into the housing market and that it is focusing on non-residential buildings such as hotels, offices and public facilities. Overseas sales are below the threshold that would require separate disclosure, and no single customer is large enough to require disclosure (see Performance & Balance).

Investment case

  1. The annual securities report for the year to March 2026 names ROE as a key management indicator. It states that the company aims to raise its price-to-book ratio through profit growth and management that takes the cost of capital into account.
  2. Sales rose in both the year to March 2026 and the first quarter of the year to March 2027. The company attributes the growth to higher-value products such as the IENI series, ultrafine-bubble products and pre-rinse faucets, and to wider adoption of the sʌnei series in hotels and restaurants (see Performance & Balance).
  3. The first-quarter earnings release forecasts a higher dividend for the year to March 2027 than the ordinary dividend paid for the year to March 2026, which also included a commemorative payment. The articles allow the board to set dividends and to buy back shares without a shareholder vote, and the company holds almost no treasury stock.
  4. The company completed new factory buildings at the Gifu plant in June 2024 and December 2025, built around automation, efficiency and solar power. It also states that it is expanding domestic production to reduce supply-chain disruption risk.

Bear case

  1. Copper is the main raw material, and the first-quarter earnings release reports a sharp fall in operating profit because copper prices hit record highs. The company states that price increases took time to reach customers in the quarter and that it expects them to take effect from the second quarter.
  2. Operating cash flow fell close to zero in the year to March 2026 and borrowings rose. The company explains that it largely stopped paying suppliers with promissory notes and electronically recorded obligations and switched to cash transfers, which sharply reduced trade payables (see Performance & Balance).
  3. Demand depends on Japanese new housing. The annual report states that housing starts fell after the April 2025 revisions to the Building Standards Act and the energy-conservation law, and that rising material costs and higher mortgage rates weighed on starts later in the year.
  4. Ownership is concentrated among individuals and affiliated groups, including directors and the employee and officers' stock ownership associations. The articles lower the quorum for special shareholder resolutions to one third of voting rights (see Shareholders and Trading liquidity).

Catalysts

  • Second-quarter results for the half to September 2026, which will show whether price increases are offsetting copper costs as the company expects. The interim dividend record date is September 30, 2026.
  • Progress against the full-year forecast for the year to March 2027, issued on May 7, 2026 and left unchanged in the first-quarter earnings release.
  • The new president's first statements on strategy, capital allocation and the stated ROE and price-to-book goals.

Key risks

  • Raw material and logistics costs: the company lists sharp rises in copper alloy prices and in freight costs among its principal risks, and states it will try to pass them on in product prices when they cannot be absorbed.
  • Concentration in Japan: most sales depend on domestic new-build and renovation demand, which shifts with housing policy, regulation and interest rates. The company also describes price competition in the industry as intense.
  • Supply-chain concentration: plants are spread across Gifu, Osaka and Dalian, but the company states that its supply chain is concentrated in the Chubu region and exposed to a large earthquake there.
  • Product defects and recalls: the company states that its product-liability insurance may not cover all damages from a large recall.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • The switch from notes to cash payments for suppliers in the year to March 2026 reduced payables in a way that does not repeat each year, so operating cash flow for that year is not directly comparable with earlier years. The first-quarter earnings release does not include a cash flow statement.
  • The annual securities report dated June 22, 2026 lists one director as representative director and president, while the first-quarter earnings release dated July 27, 2026 names a different director in that role. The largest shareholder listed in the annual report is the individual who chaired the board as president at the annual report date.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.
