AOI Electronics: Borrowing to build an advanced chip packaging plant

Business overview

  • AOI Electronics makes electronic components and reports a single segment. It discloses sales in two product categories: integrated circuits (ICs, optical sensors, wafer-level packages, LEDs) and functional components (thermal print heads and other sensors).
  • Integrated circuits make up the large majority of sales, and most of that is assembly and test work under consignment contracts. The company describes itself as an independent assembly plant outside the major corporate groups, supplying around 50 customers. Functional components are mostly custom parts it designs for customers' end products from the planning stage.
  • The group consists of the parent, three wholly owned subsidiaries and one equity-method affiliate. Hayama Industry does plating, Hi-Components Aomori and Ome Electronics make semiconductors on consignment, and Vienex, a joint venture formed with Kaneka, buys the company's sensor parts. The group had 1,944 employees at March 2026 and holds no tangible fixed assets outside Japan.
  • The fiscal year ends in March, and all recent years are 12-month periods under Japanese GAAP. Most sales go to customers located in Japan.

Investment case

  1. According to the annual securities report for the year to March 2026, inquiries from global customers for the company's panel-level package (FOLP) are increasing, and some customers have requested qualification samples. FOLP is aimed at power supply applications and high-end logic chiplet integration. The company is ramping automated mass production at its new Taki facility in Mie Prefecture, with priority on power products for AI and data centers.
  2. The same report states that the company is the only outsourced assembly and test (OSAT) company in the back-end automation research project SATAS. Intel leads the project, which is a NEDO project under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The company says it has also produced a prototype chiplet package with a via pitch of 25 microns.
  3. The company targets cash and equivalents of at least three months of consolidated sales. At March 2026 it held more than that, even after new borrowing, and its equity ratio remained high (see Performance & Balance).
  4. In the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027, sales and profits rose on demand for consumer and mobile device components. First-quarter operating profit already exceeded the full-year operating profit forecast, which the company left unchanged. The articles allow the board to authorize share buybacks, and the company holds treasury shares.

Bear case

  1. The company's medium- to long-term targets are ROA, measured on ordinary profit, and ROE. In the year to March 2026 it fell well short of both. Operating profit declined because of higher precious-metal costs and R&D spending, and net profit fell after an impairment loss.
  2. Three named customers account for a large share of sales: Nichia Corporation, Mitsumi Electric and Nisshinbo Micro Devices. Nichia, the largest, is also a major shareholder (see Shareholders). Under the consignment model, the company's orders depend on its customers' own sales.
  3. Capital spending in the year to March 2026 was far larger than operating cash flow. The gap was funded with long-term bank borrowing, which raised total borrowings sharply and lowered the equity ratio. Interest expense rose in the first quarter of the year to March 2027 (see Performance & Balance).
  4. For the year to March 2027, the company forecasts lower ordinary profit than in the prior year. First-quarter functional component sales fell on weaker overseas demand, and the quarter included a compensation payment expense under non-operating costs.

Catalysts

  • Results for the first half to September 2026, compared with the unchanged first-half and full-year forecasts. The company has said it will publish any revision promptly.
  • Start of mass production at the Taki facility, which the annual securities report lists as a strategic priority. Construction in progress on the balance sheet continued to rise in the first quarter.
  • Conversion of FOLP qualification samples into production orders. The dividend record dates are September 30 and March 31, and the company forecasts the same annual dividend as in the prior year.

Key risks

  • Exposure to the semiconductor cycle. The company says frequent product generation changes create alternating supply shortages and gluts, and that its orders depend on customers' sales and market conditions.
  • Prices and supply of gold, silver, copper, tin, nickel, palladium and ruthenium. The company warns that it may not pass cost increases on to customers in time. It is negotiating price adjustment (slide) clauses with major customers and developing alternative wiring metals.
  • Price competition from overseas production. Direct exports are a small share of sales, but the company states that more of the end products using its parts are exported, which raises its sensitivity to overseas demand and exchange rates.
  • Hayama Industry had negative net worth at March 2026, and the parent lends working capital to all three subsidiaries. Major shareholders include several individuals, the Onishi Aoi Memorial Foundation and the limited company Aoi Corporation (see Shareholders). The articles lower the quorum for special shareholder resolutions, as the Companies Act permits.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • From the first quarter of the year to March 2027, the group switched depreciation of tangible fixed assets from mainly declining-balance to straight-line. The company says this raised first-quarter operating and ordinary profit. Profits from that quarter onward are therefore not directly comparable with earlier years, and the first-quarter statements were not reviewed by an auditor.
  • The annual securities report was filed on June 26, 2026, and the first-quarter release on July 31, 2026. Balance sheet items such as cash and short-term debt changed materially between the two reporting dates.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.
