Business overview

  • Shindengen Electric Manufacturing designs and makes power electronics. It reports three segments: Power Device (diodes, thyristors, power MOSFETs, power ICs and modules), Power Unit (electrical components for motorcycles and cars, inverters for generators, and chargers for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles) and Power System (power supply equipment for telecom networks).
  • The group has 19 consolidated subsidiaries and 5,091 employees as of March 31, 2026. Semiconductors are made in Akita, Yamagata, Kanagawa, Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan, and electrical units in Saitama, India, Indonesia, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The parent buys from the group and sells through sales subsidiaries in the United States, Europe and Asia.
  • Power Unit is the largest segment by sales, and the Indonesian and Indian subsidiaries each account for a large enough share of consolidated sales to be named separately in the annual securities report (see Performance & Balance). The two customers named individually in the segment notes, PT Astra Honda Motor and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, both buy from Power Unit.
  • From April 1, 2025 the segments were renamed from Device, Electrical Components and Energy System, and the EV charging infrastructure products moved from Power System to Power Unit. The annual securities report restates the prior year on the new basis, but older segment history is not directly comparable.

Investment case

  1. The 17th medium-term plan (April 2025 to March 2028) commits to management that takes account of the cost of capital and the share price. It states a goal of a price-to-book ratio at or above parity by the end of fiscal 2027, the year to March 2028, together with targets for sales, operating margin, return on equity, capital spending and R&D.
  2. On January 5, 2026 the company acquired all shares of a newly formed company that took over Kyocera's power device business (now Hadano Shindengen, with a manufacturing subsidiary in Kaohsiung, Taiwan). The annual securities report says the deal widens the Power Device product range, and the company raised its fiscal 2027 sales target in May 2026 to include it. The acquisition produced a gain on negative goodwill.
  3. The annual securities report states that Power Device returned to a segment profit in the year to March 2026 after a loss the year before, citing higher sales, better plant utilization and a structural reform carried out in the prior year. Orders and order backlog rose across all three segments in that year (see Performance & Balance).
  4. India is the plan's priority market. The company began building a second plant at its Indian subsidiary to add motorcycle-related Power Unit capacity, and it is reviewing the risks of producing power devices locally.

Bear case

  1. The first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027 shows operating profit down from a year earlier despite higher sales, which the company attributes to higher material costs and labor and other expenses. Power System swung to an operating loss because some telecom customers paused capital spending.
  2. Net income in the year to March 2026 included special gains from selling investment securities, partly offset by a special loss for a career design support program. The company's forecast for the year to March 2027 calls for lower net income than the prior year (see Performance & Balance).
  3. Interest-bearing debt rose during the year to March 2026 and borrowings rose again in the first quarter of the year to March 2027 (see Performance & Balance). The annual securities report describes the plan's capital spending and R&D budgets over three years and the cost of the India plant.
  4. Power Unit profit fell in the year to March 2026 on weaker Asian currencies and spending on electrification products, and the company now expects wider electrification of mobility after 2030. The previous medium-term plan for fiscal 2022 to 2024 ended with issues unresolved, which the company attributes to China's economic slowdown and other external changes.

Catalysts

  • First-half results for the year to March 2027: the company has published a forecast for the six months to September 2026 and left its full-year forecast unchanged in the first-quarter earnings release.
  • Progress toward the fiscal 2027 targets and the price-to-book goal by the end of March 2028, including the integration of the former Kyocera power device business and the start of the second plant in India.
  • The takeover response plan runs until the end of the annual shareholders' meeting scheduled for June 2028, and any renewal would require a shareholder vote.

Key risks

  • The company states that a majority of its revenue comes from custom products for specific customers and that it depends heavily on the automotive market including motorcycles, so customer demand swings and economic cycles affect results.
  • The company relies on outside suppliers for main components and semiconductor raw materials. It also states that it faces strong price pressure from customers and competitors, especially in Power Device and Power Unit, while material and freight costs rise.
  • Most production and a large share of sales are outside Japan. The company states that a stronger yen generally hurts results and that political, regulatory, tariff and export-control changes in its markets could disrupt the supply chain.
  • Shareholders renewed a takeover response plan on June 27, 2025. It covers purchases that would take a shareholder group above a set voting threshold, requires bidders to submit information and wait through a board review period, and allows a free allotment of share warrants as a countermeasure on the recommendation of an independent committee. The board can abolish the plan at any time, and directors serve one-year terms.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • The company's 'fiscal 2027' refers to the year from April 2027 to March 2028. The plan targets were revised in May 2026 to include the acquired Kyocera business, so they are not directly comparable with the targets first announced for the plan.
  • The first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027 was not reviewed by an auditor and contains no cash flow statement. Segment figures for years before March 2025 use the old segment structure.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.
