Business overview

  • GSI Creos began in 1927 as a Yokohama exporter of raw silk, operated for decades under Gunze-related names, and took its current name in 2001. The group consists of the parent, 27 subsidiaries and 3 affiliates, and reports seven segments: Fiber, Outer, Inner, Semiconductor, Chemical, Hobby & Life, and Machinery & Equipment.
  • Fiber, the largest segment by sales, trades yarns and textile raw materials and has been driven by functional yarns and fabrics for innerwear. The group's two largest customers, Toray Industries (HK) Ltd. and Pacific Textiles Limited, are both in Fiber and are large enough to require separate disclosure in the annual securities report.
  • Outer handles apparel OEM and ODM, fabric exports and, since the March 2025 acquisition of Soalon, the production and processing of triacetate fiber. Inner sells innerwear products and fabrics. The industrial side imports and exports semiconductor equipment materials, paint raw materials, resins and films, sells hobby goods and cosmetic ingredients, and imports industrial and laboratory machinery.
  • Customers outside Japan, mainly in China and Hong Kong, accounted for the majority of first-quarter sales in the year to March 2027. The group had 845 consolidated employees at March 31, 2026, and its fiscal year ends in March.

Investment case

  1. The medium-term plan GSI CONNECT Phase2 (2025-2027) names capital-cost management as its first priority. It states the aim of stably keeping the price-to-book ratio at or above book value through higher ROE while balancing growth investment and shareholder returns (annual securities report for the year to March 2026).
  2. For the year to March 2026 the company reported record sales and record net income attributable to owners, and all profit lines beat its own forecast. The first quarter of the year to March 2027 was described as a record first quarter, with progress ahead of initial assumptions (see Performance & Balance).
  3. The Soalon acquisition produced a gain on negative goodwill in the year to March 2025, meaning the price paid was below the fair value of the net assets acquired. In the following year Outer's operating profit rose sharply, which the company attributed to the triacetate business and exits from unprofitable businesses.
  4. The company forecasts a higher year-end dividend for the year to March 2027 than for the prior year, and treasury stock increased during the first quarter. Its articles allow the board, rather than the shareholders' meeting, to decide dividends, and net interest-bearing debt fell during the year to March 2026 (see Performance & Balance).

Bear case

  1. Sales are concentrated: Fiber produced most group sales, and two Asian customers in that segment each account for a large share. Yet Fiber's operating profit in the year to March 2026 was smaller than Outer's, so changes in these accounts can move sales far more than profit, and the reverse for losses from them.
  2. Semiconductor sales and operating profit fell sharply in the year to March 2026, which the company attributed to continuing US export controls on semiconductors to China and changes in commercial flows for some products. The segment remained at an operating loss in the first quarter of the following year.
  3. The group holds marketable shares, mainly of business partners, and lists share-price movements as a risk. In the first quarter of the year to March 2027, most of the rise in net assets came from higher valuation gains on securities rather than retained earnings, and the company also booked gains on securities sales; several business partners, including GUNZE LIMITED, TORAY INDUSTRIES, INC. and KOMATSU MATERE Co.,Ltd., appear among its major shareholders (see Shareholders).
  4. The full-year forecast for the year to March 2027 calls for slightly lower sales and ordinary profit than the prior year. Earnings have also been hit by one-off items, including a bad-debt provision for a specific Fiber customer, an inventory write-down in Chemical, and the absence of large machinery orders in the first quarter.

Catalysts

  • First-half results for the year to March 2027, and whether the company revises the full-year forecast published on May 15, 2026; it has said it will disclose promptly if a revision is needed.
  • The year-end dividend for the year to March 2027, which the company forecasts at a higher level than the prior year.
  • Fiscal 2027 (the year to March 2028), the final year of GSI CONNECT Phase2 and the hundredth year since the company's founding, followed by the centenary of its incorporation in 2031.

Key risks

  • Credit risk: the group extends trade credit and guarantees to customers in Japan and overseas, and a customer's sudden bankruptcy could cause losses. A bad-debt provision for a specific Fiber customer was booked in the first quarter of the year to March 2026.
  • Economic, exchange-rate and country risk: the group trades with North America, Asia and Europe in multiple currencies. It uses forward contracts but cites sharp currency moves, recessions, war, terrorism and legal changes as risks.
  • Funding and pension risk: the business is funded mainly by bank borrowings, so sharp interest-rate moves are a stated risk. Most retirement plans are defined benefit, so changes in actuarial assumptions or weak markets can affect results.
  • Investment and fashion risk: the company states it may be unable to exit business investments as intended. Its apparel business is exposed to short-term shifts in consumer tastes and unseasonal weather.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • Soalon and its subsidiary were consolidated from the year to March 2026, after being acquired in March 2025. The negative goodwill gain fell in the prior year, so Outer segment results, production figures and group net income are not directly comparable across these years.
  • The plan years 2025-2027 refer to fiscal years beginning in April, so the plan's final year ends in March 2028. The first-quarter financial statements for the year to March 2027 were not reviewed by the auditor.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.
