Business overview

  • SODA NIKKA is a specialist chemical trading company founded in 1947. It sells inorganic chemicals such as caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, organic chemicals, and synthetic resins to customers in the chemical, pulp and paper, food and detergent, electronics and resin-processing industries, and to public-sector buyers such as municipal water-treatment operators.
  • It reports three segments. Chemicals covers soda products, other inorganic chemicals, solvents and fine chemicals. Functional Materials covers resins, packaging materials, equipment, installation work and industrial materials. Other covers rental income and the consolidated subsidiaries, which include trading units in Shanghai, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City and domestic packaging and regional chemical distributors (see Performance & Balance).
  • The company runs storage bases with chemical tanks and warehouses in Kushiro, Sendai, Shizuoka and Hiroshima. It had 400 consolidated employees at March 31, 2026, and does not allocate staff by segment. Sales to customers in Japan are large enough that the company is not required to give a geographic breakdown, and no single customer is large enough to require separate disclosure.
  • On April 1, 2026, the company absorbed its wholly owned subsidiary Nisshin, a distributor of packaging materials and equipment in central Japan, Kansai and Hokuriku. From the first quarter of the year to March 2027, Nisshin's sales are reported in Chemicals and Functional Materials instead of Other.

Investment case

  1. The medium-term plan Go forward STAGE3 runs from fiscal 2023 to the year to March 2027. It sets numerical targets for consolidated net income, return on equity and dividend payout ratio, and the annual securities report states that the company treats ROE above its cost of shareholders' equity as a key indicator in managing with cost of capital and share price in mind.
  2. The first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027 reports higher sales and profit than a year earlier in all three segments' profit lines. The company kept the first-half and full-year forecasts it published on May 8, 2026 (see Performance & Balance).
  3. The company forecasts an annual dividend for the year to March 2027 unchanged from the prior year, paid in equal interim and year-end installments. Its articles of incorporation allow the board, rather than the shareholders' meeting, to decide dividends under Article 459 of the Companies Act.
  4. In the year to March 2026 the company reduced short-term borrowings and paid dividends from operating cash flow, and the annual securities report states that there is no significant capital expenditure planned at present. Short-term borrowings fell again in the first quarter of the year to March 2027 (see Performance & Balance).

Bear case

  1. The company holds listed shares of business partners and banks to build or maintain relationships, and the segment notes show these investment securities make up most of the corporate assets not allocated to any segment. Rising market values of these holdings increased net assets in the year to March 2026 and again in the first quarter, which enlarges the equity base against which the ROE target is measured.
  2. Net income for the year to March 2026 included a gain on the sale of investment securities recorded as an extraordinary item, so part of that year's profit did not come from trading operations (see Performance & Balance).
  3. Several of the largest shareholders are Japanese chemical manufacturers, together with the company's employee stock ownership association (see Shareholders). This concentration of holdings by business-related companies can reduce the free float available to other investors (see Trading liquidity).
  4. Some product lines are weakening. The company reported lower caustic soda volumes in the first quarter, lost share in soda ash in the year to March 2026, and said nylon film sales fell amid lower-priced products from China. Operating cash flow also declined in the year to March 2026 as tax payments rose.

Catalysts

  • Results for the six months to September 2026, measured against the first-half forecast the company has kept unchanged since May 8, 2026.
  • Full-year results for the year to March 2027, the final year of Go forward STAGE3. The company will report against its net income, ROE and payout targets, and the long-term vision Go forward runs to fiscal 2030.
  • Any change in the company's handling of its policy shareholdings, which it reduced through sales in the year to March 2026.

Key risks

  • Most of the business is the purchase and sale of basic materials, so a sudden change in economic conditions in Japan or abroad can affect results. The company also states there is no guarantee it can fully pass on changes in product prices.
  • Most products handled at the storage bases in Kushiro, Sendai, Shizuoka and Hiroshima are poisonous or hazardous substances. An earthquake or other disaster causing a large accident at these sites could affect results.
  • Not all trade receivables are secured, and a sharp deterioration in customers' credit could cause large bad-debt losses. Receivables and payables are both large relative to total assets (see Performance & Balance).
  • A large fall in the share prices of held securities could force impairment charges. On governance, the president chairs both the board and the management committee and sits on the nomination and compensation committee, and the articles lower the quorum for director elections and special resolutions to one-third of voting rights.

Assumptions

  • Financial figures on this page come from beluuga.ai's daily data set; trading liquidity is measured over the period shown. We do not use consensus estimates.
  • Segment figures for the year to March 2027 are not directly comparable with prior years, because Nisshin's sales moved from Other to Chemicals and Functional Materials after the April 1, 2026 merger.
  • The first-quarter earnings release was not reviewed by the auditors and contains no cash flow statement. The board has five directors, three of them outside directors, and a proposal to elect six directors, three of them outside directors, was put to the June 24, 2026 general meeting.
  • Qualitative statements are taken from the annual securities report for the year to March 2026 and the first-quarter earnings release for the year to March 2027.
