A printer's business-relationship stake in its Ogaki neighbor, the AI-substrate maker Ibiden, is now worth more than the printer's entire market value.
This note does not suggest that any transaction involving Sun Messe or its Ibiden shares is pending or likely. It examines publicly available ownership and financial facts that may be relevant to investors assessing the situation.
The Ibiden share count is from Sun Messe's annual securities report for the year ended March 31, 2026, and is stated before Ibiden's two-for-one stock split effective October 1, 2026. All amounts in this note are in US dollars, converted from yen at ¥158.85 = $1, the mid-market rate on September 24, 2026 (the share-price date used above).
Sun Messe Co., Ltd. (TSE: 7883) is a commercial printing and packaging company based in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, founded in 1935 as a local print shop. Its market capitalization is about $39.6mn.
Among the shares it holds for business-relationship purposes is a position in Ibiden Co., Ltd. (TSE: 4062), the Ogaki-based maker of IC package substrates whose share price has risen sharply on demand linked to AI servers. As of March 31, 2026, Sun Messe held 320,298 Ibiden shares. At Ibiden's September 24 close of $141.05, that position is worth $45.2mn — 1.14 times Sun Messe's own market capitalization.
The crossover is recent. On March 31, 2026 the same shares were carried on Sun Messe's balance sheet at $14.9mn. Applying Ibiden's closing prices to that share count, the stake first exceeded Sun Messe's market capitalization on May 22, 2026, and peaked at about $53.3mn on June 22.
The pre-tax figure overstates what Sun Messe could actually realize. Ibiden's acquisition cost is not disclosed, so as a conservative bound we assume a cost basis of zero and apply the 29.9% statutory effective tax rate stated in Sun Messe's annual report. On that basis, the stake is worth about $31.7mn after tax. Adding Sun Messe's net cash of $18.2mn gives roughly $49.9mn, or 1.26 times its market capitalization — before counting anything for the printing business itself or for the company's roughly 90 other shareholdings.
Put differently: the market is assigning a negative value to Sun Messe's operating business. On beluuga's enterprise-value definition (market capitalization plus interest-bearing debt, less cash and all investment securities), Sun Messe's enterprise value is −$59.5mn. The stock trades at 0.34 times book equity.
The appreciation also affects how the business is measured. Unrealized gains on securities are recorded in equity, and Sun Messe's after-tax valuation difference on securities rose from $23.6mn at March 31 to $49.5mn at June 30, 2026. A larger equity base lowers return on equity: Sun Messe's LTM ROE is 2.2%. Its first mid-term plan, announced on May 14, 2026, targets ROE of at least 4.0% by the year ending March 2029, and at least 7.0% by the year ending March 2035. In its annual report, the company says that, with ROE in mind, it will continue to reduce its strategic shareholdings and put the proceeds toward growth investment and shareholder returns.
Sun Messe describes Ibiden as an important customer for printed materials, and says it holds the shares to maintain and strengthen that business relationship. The holding is reciprocal: Ibiden's own annual report shows it held 55,000 Sun Messe shares at both the March 2025 and March 2026 year-ends, citing printing work for its in-house publications. That is roughly 0.35% of Sun Messe's outstanding shares — worth about $0.14mn, against the $45.2mn flowing the other way.
The position has not been reduced. The share count rose from 158,884 at March 2025 to 320,298 at March 2026, reflecting Ibiden's two-for-one split on January 1, 2026 plus small additional purchases through Ibiden's business-partner shareholding association. At March 31, 2026 it was Sun Messe's largest listed holding, 34.5% of the $43.0mn carrying value of its 80 listed strategic shareholdings. Sun Messe did sell one position in the year: it tendered all 137,376 of its Pacific Industrial shares into a management-buyout tender offer.
Sun Messe's own shareholder register is concentrated among local and founding-family interests rather than institutional investors:
Percentages exclude treasury shares. Sun Messe also holds 2,292,300 treasury shares, 12.9% of shares issued.
Six of the ten largest holders share the Tanaka surname, together holding 16.26%. The two Ogaki regional banks on the list, Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank and Juroku Bank, are also among Ibiden's ten largest shareholders. No large-shareholding report (5% or more) has been filed for Sun Messe in beluuga's records.
Market capitalization as of September 24, 2026. Cash, investment securities and interest-bearing debt are from the June 30, 2026 balance sheet (first-quarter FY2027/3 earnings release, August 10, 2026), so they differ from the fiscal-year-end figures in the charts below.

Investment securities nearly doubled in the quarter, from $43.4mn at March 31 to $80.9mn at June 30, 2026 — about 48 times LTM operating profit. The printing business earned $1.7mn of operating profit over the last twelve months, and the company guides to $1.2mn for the current fiscal year.
Does Sun Messe's own reduction test apply to the Ibiden stake?
Sun Messe says it reviews a holding for reduction if the dividends and gross profit from transactions with that company, relative to the original investment, fall below its own ROE for two consecutive years. Measured against a low historical cost, the Ibiden stake passes easily; measured against its current market value, the return is far smaller.
How large is the printing business with Ibiden relative to the $45.2mn position?
Sun Messe does not disclose sales to Ibiden. Its whole business generated $1.7mn of operating profit over the last twelve months.
Will the stake appear in Sun Messe's capital-allocation plans?
Sun Messe has said it will keep reducing strategic shareholdings and targets ROE of at least 4.0% and a 40% payout ratio by the year ending March 2029. A sale of Ibiden shares would realize a large gain; holding them keeps the gain in equity, where it depresses ROE.
What does Ibiden's own unwinding of cross-shareholdings mean for the reciprocal holding?
Ibiden says it has cut its strategic shareholdings by 81% from the March 2024 level on a market-value basis, including tendering its Toyota Industries shares into a tender offer. It kept its 55,000 Sun Messe shares unchanged through March 2026.
How exposed is Sun Messe's valuation to a single share price?
The Ibiden position is larger than Sun Messe's market capitalization and moved from $14.9mn to $53.3mn and back to $45.2mn within six months. Ibiden's two-for-one split on October 1, 2026 doubles the share count but does not change the value.
