We mechanically aggregate large shareholding and change reports filed with EDINET (the Financial Services Agency's electronic disclosure system) and link them to a manually curated list of activist investors. This does not cover every entity that files large shareholding reports.
In Japan, "vocal shareholders" (物言う株主) is a common colloquial term for activist investors — investors who engage with company management through shareholder proposals, open letters, or other public activity, rather than staying passive. beluuga.ai uses "activist investor" and "物言う株主" interchangeably to refer to the same set of tracked investors.

We use each investor's most recently filed large shareholding or change report with EDINET as of our last update. This reflects the latest confirmed status per public filing, not necessarily the current real-time holding — once a stake drops to 5% or below, further changes may no longer be observable via EDINET.
Under Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, an investor who acquires more than 5% of a listed company's shares must file a large shareholding report with EDINET, and a change report for every 1-point-or-more move thereafter. beluuga.ai aggregates these filings to build each activist investor's holdings and history.
